Detroit – Hyundai and Kia are telling owners of some of their larger SUVs to park outdoors and away from buildings after a series of fires that involved the trailer’s wiring harness.

Korean automakers are recalling more than 281,000 vehicles in the United States for the problem, but they haven’t figured out how to fix it yet. Automakers have reported 25 fires or meltdowns in the United States and Canada due to the problem, but no accidents or injuries.

The recall covers more than 245,000 Hyundai Palisade vehicles and more than 36,000 Kia Telluride SUVs from 2020 to 2022.

In documents released by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Tuesday, the companies said that debris and moisture can build up on the circuit board in the hitch wires. This could cause an electrical short, which could result in a fire.

Hyundai said dealers will check the wiring and remove the fuses as a temporary fix. Kia does not have a temporary fix. The companies say a final fix is being developed.

In addition, dealers from both automakers have stopped selling affected SUVs until repairs can be made.
